Every segment here can be made again from the film, so keeping one is a choice, not a need. The cache keeps a segment while storing it costs less than making it again, with the wait of each viewer who asks for it. A viewer waits for a segment a prefetch asks for only by asking while it is made.

The cost of keeping more
storagemaking again, writing to R2, and waitingtotal
Monthly cost as the cache keeps more, most valuable segments first, at the last evaluation. Storage rises, the cost of making segments again falls, and the cache keeps the set where the total is lowest, within the storage cap if one is set. The dashed line is what R2 held after the evaluation: productions add to it, and every evaluation brings it back to the lowest total.
Segments along the ranking, and the line they have to clear
Each point is a segment at an even step through the last evaluation's ranking: how often it misses the edge cache, against what losing it costs per gigabyte each month. Above the line, storing it costs less than making it again; below, it is made again when asked for.
